Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani to Wanda Metropolitano in the January transfer window. The Uruguayan striker is out of contract at Parc des Princes in June and is looking for new options after falling down in the pecking order at PSG.

Atletico Madrid are monitoring Edinson Cavani’s situation at Paris Saint Germain as the forward is out of contract in summer. Cavani has fallen down the pecking order and not made it into Thomas Tuchel’s plans. The former Napoli man has just managed to play 434 minutes this season, with Tucel preferring on loan Mauro Icardi as the first choice striker and Atleti look to take advantage and lure the Uruguayan to Madrid in January, the ESPN has reported.

The report further added that Cavani won’t be offered any deal extensions at Paris and is free to leave the club after losing his place in the team due to a series of injuries in the past year. Cavani's agent and half-brother Walter Guglielmone is exploring different options and has held talks with Atletico. The 32-year-old has been admired at Wanda Metropolitano and coach Diego Simeone is a big fan of the Uruguayan predator.

However, Atletico will have to sell Deigo Costa to make room for Cavani. Costa has interest from Brazil and China but a move in January could prove difficult. Cavani currently earns close to €18 million a year in Paris and will have to take a wage cut if he is to join Atletico Madrid in January. ESPN further reported that PSG are not willing to let the 32-year-old striker leave in January as that would leave them without any back-up for Mauro Icardi.

Los Rojiblancos aren’t willing to wait and also view RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner as a possible forward option. However, Werner will be a much costly operation considering he is only 23 years old and has a contract with the Germans till 2023.
