Rio Olympic medal-winners on Day 5 : Stunning comeback by Kristin Armstrong; Uchimura shines
USA and China continued their dominance at the top of the medal tally, however, it was Japan who are now up to the third place after Kohei Uchimura did what he does best. The last installment of Lochte-Phelps rivalry got off to an exciting start, while Kristin Armstrong proved age is just a number.
21-year-old Dmitriy Balandin won the Men's 200m Breaststroke finals with a timing of 2:07.46 to give Kazakhstan their first swimming medal in Olympic history. He beat USA' Josh Prenot and Russia's Anton Chupkov to the finish line, who won the silver and the bronze medal respectively.
In what will be the last installment of the famous Ryan Lochte-Michael Phelps rivalry, Phelps got the better of Lochte in the Men's 200m Individual Medley semifinal event—and that too by a convincing margin. Phelps won the second semifinal with a timing of 1:55.78, while Ryan Lochte finished second with 1:56.28. The duo will once again face each other in the final.
In cycling, Kristin Armstrong once again proved that age is just a number. The 42-year-old won her third straight Olympic gold medal in the Women's Individual Time Trial event with a timing of 44:26.42. Armstrong, who was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in 2001, was asked the media why she came out of retirement and still wants to compete at the top, despite her numerous hip surgeries. She replied, “Because I can.”
Meanwhile, Fehaid Aldeehani won Gold in the double trap shooting event to become the first Independent Olympic athlete to do so. Aldeehani, from Kuwait, has had to compete under the Olympic flag after the country was banned from the Rio Olympics by the IOC for government interference. It must be a mixed feeling to have won it but not to have done it for your country.
Jin Jong-oh of South Korea won the gold in 50m Pistol Men's finals with a total of 193.7 points. The world record holder in 60 shots, easily defeated Hoàng Xuân Vinh of Vietnam and Kim Song-
Japan’s Kohei Uchimura, five-time Olympic medalist and World champion, once again showed his class as he won the gold medal in Men's Individual All-Round (Artistic Gymnastic) finals with a score of 92.365.
