Shot putter Inderjeet Singh has been banned for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing a dope test and would miss the 2020 Tokyo Olympics because of the ban. Singh failed his dope test days ahead of his departure for 2016 Olympics and would serve the ban till July 24, 2020.

Incheon Asian Games bronze medallist, Inderjeet Singh, who was the first Indian track and field athlete to qualify for Rio, would serve a retrospective ineligibility period, effective July 25, 2016, the day he was provisionally suspended by the NADA after his urine sample showed the presence of "non-specified substance". This means the former Asian champion's ban would come to an end on July 24, 2020, which ruled him out of Tokyo Olympics qualifiers.

The suspension was ordered on Wednesday by a NADA disciplinary headed by jurist Manik Dogra. Sources close to Inderjeet informed TOI that he would knock on the doors of NADA's appeals panel against the verdict.

In its 16-page order, the panel noted, "We hold that while there have been serious departures from WADA guidelines, however, the athlete has failed to conclusively establish that these deviations had a direct nexus or did in fact result in an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF). Consequently, we uphold the violation of Article 2.1 resulting in ineligibility of the athlete for a period of four years commencing from the date of his provisional suspension."
