Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched the top spot at the Youth Olympics to become India’s first gold medallist in the men’s 62 kg weightlifting category. With India winning seven silver medals in the previous two editions, the youngster has now put an end to India’s long drawn gold quest at the Games.

The Mizo weightlifting gold medalist became the first ever in history to achieve the feat as he lifted a total weight of 274 kg in Buenos Aires late on Monday. The silver medal went to Turkey's Caner Toptas, who lifted 263kg (122kg + 141kg), while Colombia's Villar Estiven Jose claimed the bronze with an effort of 260kg (115kg + 143kg).

An earlier silver medallist in the world youth championship and now an Army Sports Institute legacy, Jeremy garnered a 2 kg lead over Turkey’s Toptas after the snatch category, and started off with the clean and jerk after all his competitors had finished their three lifts.

Jeremy  could have stopped with his first lift of 142 kg which was enough to get him the gold but he decided to go for the third attempt and went on to lift 150 kg giving him an 11 kg advantage over the Turkish.
