Although injuries are part and parcel of every sport, some of them can be unbearable to watch and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered one such injury at Wimbledon on Thursday during her second round match against Sorana Cirstea. The very sight of the injury left the crowd feeling sick.

The American, who is ranked 103 in the world, suffered a freak right knee injury after facing a horrific fall on the court during the third set of her second-round match against Sorana Cirstea. The 32-year-old fell to the ground and yelled "f**k, help me, help me" while clutching her leg.

Sands had won the first set 6-4 and lost the second on a tie-break moments before the fall occurred.

In response to Sands’ woes, Cirstea jumped over the net and gasped as her stricken opponent was sprawled out on the floor. Speaking of the gravity of the injury Cirstea said, "I think the kneecap, it was out. I'm not a doctor, I'm not a specialist. I've never seen anything like this, but it wasn't in a normal position,” reported the Express.

"That's why I kind of freaked out because I've never seen this. I spoke with my physio afterwards, if he knows a little bit more. Hopefully, it's not as bad as it seems. Hopefully, she won't need surgery or something like this," she added.

While fans covered their mouths in horror at the incident, medics came to Sands’ side and spent 25 minutes treating her as husband Justin and her doubles partner Lucie Safarova rushed to help. The pair has won the last three Grand Slam titles at the US Open, Australian Open and French Open. They had been hoping to complete the full set at SW19.
