Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that the third edition of Khelo India Youth Games will be held in Guwahati, Assam next year. The national-level games to spot talent at the grassroots level will be held from January 18 to 30, in partnership with IOA, SGFI and Assam government.

The Youth Games, or School Games as it was previously called, are the national-level multidisciplinary grassroots games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 years for school students and under-21 for college students. Every year, the top 1000 kids will be given an annual scholarship of INR 5,00,000 for eight years to prepare them for the international sporting events, like the Asian Games or Olympics.

On February 27, 2019, PM Narendra Modi launched the Khelo India App at the Youth Indian Parliament in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi to promote sports and fitness.

The inaugural edition was held in New Delhi while Pune hosted the second one this year. Haryana (2018) and Maharashtra (2019) exchanged the two spots, while Delhi came in third both times.

Sports Minister Rijiju made the official announcement for next year’s games via his Twitter account.

“I am happy to announce that the third edition of the Khelo India Youth Games will be held at Guwahati from January 18-30, 2020,” Rijiju tweeted.

The coming year, the event will be hosted in partnership with the Indian Olympics Association and the Assam state government.

“The Games will see a participation of more than 10,000 athletes and officials. It will be conducted in partnership with IOA, SGFI & Assam as host State,” he added.
