Chandigarh golfer Akshay Sharma’s brilliant performance on Thursday, where he scored four-under-68, took him to a two-shot lead at seven-under-209 lead at the Kensville Golf & Country Club. Compatriot Tapy Ghai ended the third round with a score of five-under-211 as he is currently tied second.

The 20-year-old has been overbrimming with confidence following his last win in PGTI that took place in Noida last month. Coming to the third round after lying overnight tied third and two off the lead in Ahmedabad, Sharma ((71-70-68) produced as many as five birdies that came in exchange of a lone bogey, as he moved into the lead.

His first birdie landed two-feet from the pin, which was followed by an impressive 45-feet conversion for birdie on the fifth. His second tap-in birdie came on the sixth from a beautiful chip, while his sole bogey came at the expense of a three-putt on the eighth, the only black mark of his day. His other two more birdies came on the 14th and 15th.

“I’ve been fairly high on confidence since my breakthrough win last month. That has helped me take my game a notch higher. I hit it with precision today and created many chances for myself. I did well with the wedges as I set up two tap-in birdies. A score of three-under over the first six holes really set the ball rolling for me today. I’ll look to shoot an under-par score in the final round. That would give me a good opportunity to compete for the title. The two holes that one has to look out for here are the 12th and the 15th. Both holes have a tricky layout,” said the currently ranked fifth in the PGTI Order of Merit, reported Indian Express.

Gurugram’s Ghai, on the other hand, had a day to forget, After being the overnight leader, he fell down to being tied second place after scoring five-under-211. He has now been joined by Sri Lankan N Thangaraja (68), Mukesh Kumar (69) of Mhow, and Kapurthala’s Ashbeer Saini (69) in that position. While Ghai had a birdie and a bogey, Thangaraja produced a flawless round of 68. Saini shot an eventful 69 featuring eight birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey, while Kumar’s score of 69 had four birdies and a bogey, which saw them get into a four-way tie for second.

Delhi’s Sachin Baisoya also saw a drop from second to the sixth place following his round of 72 seeing as many as three bogeys on the last four holes as his score stood at four-under-212. Karnal’s Maniram, on the other hand, produced the best round of the tournament, scoring a six-under-66 that included eight birdies and two bogeys, taking him from tied 38th to seventh place at two-under-214.
