Badminton roundup | Purva Barve defends Israel Junior title, Shubhankar Dey loses KaBal final

Purva Barve has successfully defended her girl’s singles title at the under-19 Israel Junior championship after defeating Anastasiia Pustinskaia. However, Shubhankar Dey has failed to claim the KaBal International title as he lost in straight games to third seed Victor Svendsen.

India’s challenge in the prestigious All England Open ended in the semifinal with the exit of PV Sindhu but in the other competitions on the international circuit Indian players showing their talent. Purva Barve won the Israel Junior championship organized in Rishon LeZion where the fourth-seeded Indian player took 66 minutes and three games against Russia’s Anastasiia Pustinskaia to emerge victorious.

This is her first title in the current year and third overall as earlier she won the Israel Junior in 2017, Italian Junior International in 2017 and also managed a bronze at the Russian Junior White Nights 2017.

Like Purva, Shubhankar Dey also managed to reach in the final but in a different event as Dey reached in the men’s singles final of the KaBal International in Karvina, Czech Republic. However, he failed to convert the match into a victory. The top-seeded Indian showed a good fight in both the games but he could not pull off a victory in the match and lost 21-19, 21-19 to Victor Svendsen in 38 minutes.

Apart from the international level, badminton action was going on in India as well as players participated in the All India Rankings doubles tournament which held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. K Nandagopal and Rutuparna Panda successfully won the double mixed doubles title as the duo beat Arundhati Pantawane and Gouse Shaikh 21-16, 21-13 in the final.

Earlier Nandagopal and Panda also bagged men’s and women’s doubles titles while playing with their respective partners. Panda and Pantawane won the women’s final against Ritika Thaker and Simran Singhi 21-16, 21-10 while Nandagopal and Alwin Francis defeated Anjan and Ranjan of Assam 21-14, 21-15 to win the final of men’s doubles.
