Vijay Shankar is the latest to join India’s growing list of injury concerns in the World Cup after being struck on the toes by a Jasprit Bumrah yorker during the net session. India have already lost Shikhar Dhawan for the rest of the tournament and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for at least two matches

Vijay Shankar, who came into complete the fifth over replacing an injured Bhuvneshwar, became the latest player in the Indian camp to suffer an injury. During Wednesday’s net session, he was hit flush on the toes by a yorker from Bumrah and was immediately in pain. But, sources confirmed that this was only a scare and nothing serious.

“Yes, Vijay was in pain but it has subsided by the evening. Hopefully, there’s nothing scary,” a team source told PTI.

The handy all-rounder chipped in with 15 runs, and two crucial wickets including that of captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, in India’s 89-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan. As has been the case since his debut against Australia in January, Shankar is used as a floater in India’s middle-order.

With Dhawan ruled out of the tournament with a thumb fracture and Bhuvneshwar resting with a hamstring niggle, Shankar’s injury scare will make the team management nervous.
