ICC World Cup 2019 | Injuries are part and parcel of the game, nobody has control on it, says Sourav Ganguly

After Bhuvneshwar Kumar was ruled out of the next two matches of the World Cup with stiffness, Sourav Ganguly has said that injuries are part and parcel of the game and no one has a control on it. India will play bottom-placed Afghanistan in their fifth match at Southampton on Saturday.

Piling on the injury concerns to India’s World Cup campaign, the BCCI confirmed yesterday that opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament. Dhawan broke his thumb after being struck by a Pat Cummins delivery. Despite going on to score a match-winning hundred in that game, Dhawan did not field, and now, he will not take any further part in the competition. Rishabh Pant has been announced as his replacement in the squad.

However, former India skipper Ganguly feels that injuries are part of the game and the current Indian side has enough quality to cope up with the difficulties caused.

“Injuries are part and parcel of the game nobody has control on it. Hope others come and do well. Hope others come and do well. I thought Vijay Shankar did exceptionally well with the ball in Bhuvi’s absence. This is a good Indian team and they will make it to the semis. We will see what happens after that.” Ganguly was quoted saying by Scroll.

Kumar, who left the field after bowling just 16 deliveries against Pakistan, was aptly replaced by Vijay Shankar who struck with his first ball to remove an in-form Imam Ul-Haq. Likewise, KL Rahul scored a composed fifty at the top of the innings, playing as replacement opener for Dhawan.

Ganguly reckons that such versatility in quality is what makes India the standout team at the World Cup so far, alongside hosts England, and Australia.

“India have looked the best in the World Cup so far, then England and Australia,” Ganguly said.
