No Indian women's singles badminton player is skillful: Ex-World No.1 Park Joo-bong triggers controversy
Former Olympic medalist Park Joo-bong has commented that none of the Indian women's singles players, including World No.2 Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu possess exceptional skill but rely on power. The Korean heaped praise on Pullela Gopichand though, for the work he has done as a coach so far.
“None of the Indian women's singles players are skillful. They don't rank among the top four when it comes to skill. Saina doesn't have the skill but she relies a lot on power and speed. Sindhu has some problems with her movement on the court,
"When she is in full flow Sindhu plays the best attacking game, even better than Li Xuerui and Wang Yihan. She has a good height and uses it well to smash the shuttle hard," Park Joo-bong told Times of India.
The 51-year-old, who won the All England Open nine times during his career, has praised Dronacharya award winner Pullela Gopichand for his revolutionary work as a coach to propel Indian badminton in the right direction. He said, "Earlier, it was Prakash Padukone and after a long time Gopichand arrived on the scene. His career was cut short by injuries. But as a coach he has changed the face of Indian badminton. There are so many good international players from India now. It is all credit to Gopi, he managed to put a good system in place”.
Park, who was inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame in 2001 and is long time head coach of the Japanese national team, insisted that despite recent results, China remain the most dominant force in the sport.
"The Chinese may have suffered some setbacks but still they are the best. In women's singles many are catching up. But I still think an injury-free Li Xuerui is a clear favourite for Olympics in women's singles. Wang Yihan too is dangerous but erratic. Current world champion Carolina Marin is very talented but she should control herself. Once she gets agitated she becomes very angry and makes mistakes," he explained.
