Sania, Saina and I are on a roll: PV Sindhu
Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu brought numerous glories to the nation in the past one year. Apart from their Hyderabad connection, Sindhu feels that 'S' factor has proved to be lucky for the trio, along with their hard work of course. Sindhu also opened up on her fashion and interest in films.
Sania Mirza has held the World No.1 ranking, in doubles, longer than any other Indian before her, across genders and Saina Nehwal became the first Indian woman to become the World No.1 in badminton last year. While PV Sindhu is yet to scale such heights at a young age of 20, she is the first Indian woman win a medal, in singles, at the World Championship.
In an interview with the Times of India, Sindhu was asked about her fellow Hyderabadi stars, who were recently bestowed with the Padma Bhushan award. Sindhu joked about the 'S' connection, she said, “Yes, I guess 'S' is a lucky factor for three of us and we are on a roll! But we Hyderabadi girls are very hardworking too. So, it is a combination that works and not luck alone”.
Even at such a young stage of her career, Sindhu has always encountered comparisons with Saina Nehwal. The Asian Games medalist, however, maintained that both of them share an amicable relationship.
“Saina is a senior player who is doing extremely well. Off the court, we are friends. We also congratulated each other on my Malaysia win and her Padma honour. But on court, there is a healthy competition that drives us. After all, there is only one person who can win and both of us try for that slot,” she explained
When asked about the importance of fashion for an athlete on and off the court, Sindhu said that although she loves 'experimenting' what matter most is how you perform on the court.
“I love to experiment with my looks and dresses on and off the court because I love to turn out very well. But, I must add here that just good-looking athletes can't do anything for their sport. As my coach Pullela Gopichand says, 'Unless you perform well, nobody cares how you look,' I have always followed this dictum,” She told TOI.
Sindhu also opened up on her life outside the sport, her love for music, shopping and movies. He said, “I just can't do without music. I'm pursuing my MBA from Hyderabad although I don't get to attend the classes. But I make sure that I shop as much as all my friends and pick up bags, goggles, dresses and shoes at will. Since I'm the youngest in the family, I sulk when my parents deny me something, although I come around when they explain why it was denied. Another big passion of mine is movies; I'm a complete movie buff“.
Sindhu also disclosed her interest in acting in her biopic in the future. She said, “I would love to act in a film if it is based on my life. But then it all depends on who is making it and how much time it would require for me shoot. If everything falls into place, why not!”.
