After Sushil Kumar had requested a personal coach ahead of the qualifying events for the next Olympics, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has hired Russian coach Malikov Kamal. Kamal is the third personal coach to be appointed by the federation and it will bear all the expenses of the coach.

After Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar will also get a personal foreign coach ahead of the Olympic qualifiers. According to a report published on The Tribune, the WFI has agreed to Sushil’s request for a personal coach keeping the qualification events for the 2020 Tokyo Games in mind. Malikov Kamal will guide Sushil in his preparation for the qualifiers which are scheduled to commence from this September.

As per the report, Kamal is expected to get a salary of $3,300 per month and the federation will bear all the expenses. Bajrang Punia and Vinesh are under the guidance of Georgia’s Shako Bentinidis and Woller Akos of Hungary respectively. Meanwhile, Sakshi Malik and Pooja Dhanda have also made similar appeals to the federation in a letter.

“Yes, they have written to us about the hiring of a personal coach. We have asked for more details. Once we get the details it will be forwarded to the WFI president, who may appoint a committee to look at his candidacy,” WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar was quoted as saying by The Tribune.

Hossien Karimi and Andrew Cook are the two other foreign coaches with Indian wrestling at the moment and are supervising the preparations of the men’s and women’s freestyle teams.
