Former India batsman Abhijit Kale has been named as the head of MCA’ senior selection committee which will be in duty to select players for Ranji Trophy and U-23 teams. The senior selection committee includes the names of Kaiser Fakih, Ketan Doshi, Abhijit Deshpande and Ravi Yerawadekar.

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has names two new committees, while one will be in the charge of Ranji Trophy and U-23 teams, the other will oversee the selection of the U-19s. The senior selection committee will be led by former India batsman Abhijit Kale, who will be replacing Milind Gunjal as the chairman of the committee.

Kale has played only one ODI in India’s colours but has proved his mettle in first class cricket having amassed 7134 runs at an average of 54.45 in 93 matches. According to a TOI report, MCA secretary Riyaz Bhagwan has shared the name of the members of the selection committee which includes Kaiser Fakih, Ketan Doshi, Abhijit Deshpande and Ravi Yerawadekar along with chairman Kale.

This will be Kale’s first stint as the selector of a state team. Kale has shared that his experience of first class cricket will help him in fulfilling his duties as a selector.

“I was offered this opportunity by MCA and I decided to take up this responsibility,” Kale told TOI.

Kale was in the news back in 2003 after he was handed a year long ban by the BCCI after the then national team selectors accused him of bribing them to select him for the national side. While Kale denied the allegations of bribing he did apologise for influencing the selectors.
