Bengaluru FC deserved to win the trophy: Sanjoy Sen
Mohun Bagan manager Sanjoy Sen has said that they are to be blamed for losing the lead they had at the top of the points table, at the same time saying that Bengaluru FC deserved to win the title. However, Sen is pleased with the consistency his team has shown in their AFC Cup campaign.
"Bengaluru FC deserved to win the trophy. We lost the opportunity and we are to be blamed for not making the most of it. See Barcelona - they were leading by seven points but now they have the same points (79) as Atletico de Madrid. Everybody was saying that Barcelona will win the La Liga. So if it can happen with Barcelona, it can happen to Mohun Bagan or any team. That is the beauty of the league all over the world.
"The most important thing is that we showed consistency. We played very well in the AFC Cup last year also and this season we are still unbeaten from the four matches that we played. It's good for Indian football as well," Sanjoy Sen told Goal.
Mohun Bagan are currently top of Group G with 10 points from four matches, and they are in need of two more points to guarantee themselves the top-spot in the group – which will ensure an easier draw in the knockout stage.
"Our primary task (defending I-League championship) is over now. We have almost qualified for the knockout stages in the AFC Cup. Another two matches left (Maziya away and South China at home) and we will be hoping to lead the table. That will be our target for now. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final will certainly be tough. We will strive to progress as far as possible," Sanjoy Sen added..
