Women’s football in India is going through an exciting phase, asserts Kushal Das

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das gas stated that women’s football in India is going through an exciting phase at the moment. India is going to host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup next year while the AIFF is getting ready for the 12-team Indian Women’s League starting from tomorrow.

Women’s football in the country is certainly going through a good phase at the moment. India has got the rights for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in 2020 after the All India Football Federation successfully hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017. It will be a new chapter that will be written in women’s football in India when the 2019 edition of the Indian Women’s League will kick-off in Ludhiana tomorrow. This will be the biggest edition of the league with 12 teams participating in it.

Ahead of the start of the tournament, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das has said that women’s football in the country is going through an exciting phase and hailed the women footballers for producing some great results on the international circuit.

“Women's football in our country is going through an exciting phase. We have seen the Indian Women's Team produce some great results at the International front,” Das told the AIFF media team.

“We are sure to see the rise of more talented players in the third season of the Hero Indian Women's League. I would like to thank the Punjab Football Association for their support in hosting the IWL, and wish the participating clubs all the best for the tournament in Ludhiana.”

The Indian Women’s League will begin on Sunday at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana with defending champions Rising Student’s Club, Cuttack taking on Gokulam Kerala FC in the inaugural game. In total 12 teams are participating in the league with Group I consisting of Rising Student’s Club, Gokulam, FC Alakhpura, Hans Women Football Club, Central SSB Women Football Club and Panjim Footballers. Meanwhile, Group II consists of Manipur Police, Sethu FC Bangalore United FC, SAI-STC Cuttack, FC Kolhapur City, and Baroda Football Academy.
