Rio 2016 | Shuttlers and Dipa Karmakar to lead India’s charge on Day 9
Dipa Karmakar, the first-ever Indian gymnast to reach the final of an Olympic event, will be the star attraction for India on day 9 of the Rio Olympics. Shuttlers Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and Kidambi Srikanth will also play their last group games today in a bid to qualify for the Round of 16.
On day 9 of the Rio Olympics, India’s hopes of a medal rest on the shoulders of 23-year-old Dipa Karmakar. She will be in action in the women's vault final today as the country awaits for her historic Produnova vault. Badminton star Saina Nehwal will look to enter the Round of 16 today as she attempts to better her bronze medal winning effort from the London Olympics. PV Sindhu will also be action in the women’s singles group stage match today. In the men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth will face Henri Hurskainen of Sweden in his second group match.
After disappointing in both the 50m rifle prone and the 10m rifle events, Gagan Narang will be back in action once again on Sunday alongside Chain Singh for the 50m rifle 3 positions qualification rounds. After failing to advance in the previous two shooting events, Gagan Narang will look to redeem himself in this event.
In boxing, Manoj Kumar will go up against Uzbekistan's Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in the Round of 16 in the men’s light welter 64 kg boxing category as he looks to keep the Indian hopes in boxing alive.
Indian hockey team have come a long way in this Olympics as they qualified for the knockout stages for the first time since 1980, and will look to continue their good form when they face group B toppers Belgium in the quarterfinals.Â
Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna lost their semi-final against Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram but will be back for the bronze-medal play-off tomorrow.
