Indian judoka Avtar Singh qualifies for Rio Olympics

India's Avtar Singh has qualified for the upcoming Rio Olympics in the under 90 kg weight category in the Judo discipline under the continental quota. Avtar is ranked 79th in the world, according to the latest list released by the International Judo Federation (IJF), with a total of 182 points.

“I am happy to inform you that as per the World Ranking list of the International Judo Federation posted today, the World Ranking of Mr. Avtar Singh is 79 with total 182 points. As per this position, Mr.Avtar Singh, Indian Judo Player of below 90kg Weight Category is shown currently qualified through Continental quota for 2016 Olympic Games in Judo discipline. However, we will have to wait for the final list of all the qualified players of Judo for 2016 Olympic Games, as one more qualifying tournament (of top ranking players) is yet to be held, and the final list of all qualified Judo Players will be declared by the IJF, by the end of May 2016.

“We are now very hopeful that Mr. Avtar Singh will qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games,” Mukesh Kumar, president of the Judo Federation of India, said in a press release published few days back. The final list of the qualified players has been released by IJF now, and Avtar Singh features in it, still at 79.

Avtar Singh, who hails from Gurdaspur, Punjab, is currently working with the Punjab Armed Police. He won a gold medal at the South Asian Games held earlier this year in India. In the Asian Judo Championship, held in April, he finished fifth after putting up a heartening performance.
