Mexican tennis player banned for match-fixing
Mexico’s Daniel Garza has been banned for six months after being found guilty of match-fixing at an ITF Futures tournament in California. The investigation body also fined the player USD 5,000 for “attempting to influence the outcome” of a match.
Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), the investigating body for the sport, found Garza guilty of match-fixing at the ITF USA Futures 11 tournament in Calabasas in March this year.
“The suspension applies with immediate effect and means that he is excluded from competing in, or attending, any tournament or event organised or sanctioned by the governing bodies of the sport,” a TIU statement said.
The 31-year-old was found guilty of breaching Section D.1.d of the tennis anti-corruption program, which states: “No covered person shall, directly or indirectly, contrive or attempt to contrive the outcome or any other aspect of any event.”
Garza, who reached a career-best ranking of 294 back in 2012, is currently 1,065 in the world in singles.
