Britain's Joe Salisbury provided an early contender for play of the tournament at Wimbledon so far, during his mixed doubles encounter against Neal Skupski and Anna Smith. Salisbury retrieved a shot from the stands, before returning to hit the winning volley, at the net, on the same point.

The incident occurred in the third game of the second set, with the set tied at one game apiece, and Smith serving to Salisbury. The 28-year-old hit a serve straight into her opponent's body, which he managed to return awkwardly.

Skupski pounced on the return at the net and must have thought he hit the winner when he hit the ball straight into the ground before the bounce took it into the stands. However, Salisbury did not give up on the point as he jumped the barricade and managed to retrieve the ball. Moreover, by the time Smith returned the high-ball, Salisbury had managed to come back on the court and volleyed the winner past Skupski.

However, unfortunately for Salisbury, his heroics weren’t enough on the day as he and Dunne eventually went down 5-7, 3-6. But Salisbury can take solace in the fact that he managed to produce one of the best points of the Championships, before bowing out.
