England head coach Trevor Bayliss believes that the Bristol incident will be a wake-up call for Ben Stokes and he'll certainly focus on his cricket career, following the incident. Ben Stokes was charged with affray but after a trial at a Bristol Court, he was found 'not guilty’ by the jury.

Trevor Bayliss, however, feels that Ben Stokes will need to apologise publicly for his involvement in the Bristol incident. Stokes has been allowed to join the England Test squad for the match at Trent Bridge against India, after he was found 'not guilty’ by the jury at Bristol Crown Court. Bayliss feels the incident will be a wake-up call for Stokes, leading him to focus on his career.

“I can understand where people are coming from when they argue the opposite. There are a couple of things I suppose: he's already missed a number of games, which is not good from his point of view. We can only take things on face value and he certainly understands that he was out when he shouldn't have done and got involved with something that he shouldn't have been involved in. He'll certainly pull his way from now on, going forward. I'm sure it has been a wake-up call for him,” said Bayliss.

As for the public apology, Bayliss stated that it is a matter to be handled by Stokes’ management team, but he feels that he needs to issue a public apology for his part in the incident.

“That'll be up to Ben and his management team, I suppose. But certainly, when he came out to New Zealand after the Ashes tour that he missed, he certainly addressed the players in the changing room when he first arrived. for the distraction and difficulty caused by the incident,” said Bayliss.

“I think it was important to actually apologise to the boys in the team, management of the team and management at the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) - who had to go through a lot of extra activities to work our way through it. I'm sure something will be forthcoming,” he added.

Stokes had apologized to his fellow teammates after he arrived in Hamilton during the T20 tri-series against Australia and New Zealand after rejoining the squad. Stokes had missed the whole of Ashes tour along with the ODI series against Australia. The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) will be organising for a hearing to look into the impositions to be made on Stokes and Alex Hales. Though Hales was involved in the incident, he was not charged. However, Bayliss will not be involved in the proceedings as the body works independently of England Cricket Board.

“It was a collection decision. Myself, management, the captain of the team, Andy Flower, the board, Ed Smith - everyone had a bit of a say. It was basically thought that for his own wellbeing, it was good to get him back around cricket,” Bayliss said.

With the previous experiences, it has been considered that the behaviour of the English cricket team has deteriorated. The English Cricket Board are investing to find ways of retaining their reputation among the cricket fans. Despite not agreeing with the behaviour of the squad, Bayliss feels measures have to be taken to remedy the lack of professionalism that has come into focus.

“Since the Bristol incident, there's a lot of work being done on team culture with the two captains and that will be ongoing. We've had to make one or two changes with curfews and that type of thing. There'll be ongoing work done on team culture and what it means to actually play for England,” he said.

With the performances displayed by Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, Bayliss is not sure of the fact that Stokes will be getting his place back in the team so easily.

“It's a good position to be in from that point of view. Whether he plays or not, we've got some guys in form in the team. It's going to be a difficult decision to make whoever misses out, whether it's Ben or someone else. It's a position we've been trying to get into in the Test team for a while. The one-day team is a difficult team to select. The Test team, it's been difficult for other reasons. But we're starting to get some good young players into the team which makes it a difficult job for selectors,” Bayliss said.
