Sopot Grand Prix Athletics | Murali Sreeshankar bags gold in long jump
Indian long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar has clinched the gold medal in the Sopot Grand Prix Athletics competition in Poland with a 7.78m jump. On the other hand, Indian javelin throwers Shivpal Singh and Rajinder Singh finished at the fifth and sixth positions respectively in the final of the event.
Murali Sreeshankar continued his brilliant run in the season as he bagged the gold medal in the Sopot Grand Prix Athletics competition in Poland. His second round effort of 7.78m earned him the top spot on the podium on Sunday. The National Record holder went past Norway’s Henrik Flaetnes who jumped 7.65 in the final.
“He (Sreeshankar) has had three competitions in about 10 days, he was feeling a bit weak. It was cold too,” S. Murali, Sreeshankar’s dad and coach, was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Sreeshankar had earlier won a gold medal at the Copenhagen Athletics Games in Denmark with his best jump of 7.93m.
India didn’t have a great outing in the men’s javelin throw event as Shivpal Singh recorded 76.90m to finish fifth and was the best among the two Indians in the event. His compatriot Rajinder Singh finished just below him at the sixth place with a throw of 73.06. Marcin Krukowski won the gold with 82.33m.
