Reports | Neeraj Chopra undergoes elbow surgery
Reports have suggested that Neeraj Chopra has undergone a surgery in Mumbai for his elbow injury which has hampered his progress in 2019 so far. The Javelin thrower had missed the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha last month because of the injury and is doubtful the World Championships as well.
According to a report published by Scroll, star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has undergone surgery on his right elbow in Mumbai under the supervision of sports orthopaedic Dinshaw Pardiwala. After a decent recovery period in January earlier this year, Chopra felt the pain in his right elbow while preparing for the Asian Athletics Championships and had to skip the continental event as well.
According to a report in The Tribune, the decision of surgery was delayed because of two confusing diagnoses. Dr Padiwal and a few other experts had opined that there was a need of only an arthroscopic surgery to remove the bone fragments while national javelin coach Uwe Hohn and a Belgian doctor were of the opinion that his ligament was torn and there was a need of operating that as well.
However, ligament operation could have taken a longer period to recover and after discussions and consultation with a number of doctors, it was decided to go ahead with only the arthroscopy.
If Chopra recovers in time, then there is a chance that he can start practising again in August and still has a chance to make it to the upcoming World Athletics Championships which will begin from September 27 in Doha.
Meanwhile, the national athletics head coach Bahadur Singh had said earlier this week that if Chopra is not fully fit then he should be careful and should not rush himself for the world event to be held this year. Chopra, who had won a gold medal each in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2018, is considered as one of the brightest medal prospects in the 2019 Tokyo Olympics.
