Noah Nirmal Tom and VK Vismaya have won the men’s and women’s 400m titles respectively at the ongoing National Open Athletics Championships in Ranchi. In men’s shot put event, Tajinderpal Singh Toor broke his own national record that he had registered during the Asian Games last year.

India’s 400m runners Noah Nirmal Tom and VK Vismaya were at their best in their respective men’s and women’s finals as they won the gold medals. Tom clocked 45.88 seconds to win the final race while 22-year-old Vismaya recorded a timing of 52.71 seconds to get the better of Kiran and Anjali Devi Kundu from Haryana.

In the men’s shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who was playing for the Federation, got his best-ever distance and broke his own national record. Toor recorded 20.92m to thrash his previous best of 20.75m which he had set at the continental event in 2018.

“I was in good rhythm today. I was aiming 21.30 to 21.40 and I think it crossed that in the last throw but unfortunately it was a foul,” Toor said. “I will try again to qualify for Olympics at the World Military Games in Wuhan, China later this month. It will be a good competition at Wuhan,” Toor told PTI.

Jharkhand’s Priyanka Kerketta won gold in the women’s long jump final with a 6.16m effort while Bhawna Jat from the Railways won the women’s 20km race walk with a new meet record by clocking 1:38:30.00.
