World Military Games | Anandan Gunasekaran claims twin gold medals in athletics

Indian para-athlete Anandan Gunasekaran grabbed two gold medals in the disabled men’s 100m and 400m IT1 events and opened the account for India at the World Military Games in Wuhan, China. Gunasekaran, first, won the 100m gold by clocking 12.00 seconds and then went on to win the 400m final.

Indian para-athlete Anand Gunasekaran opened the medal’s tally for India as he struck gold medals in the 100m and 400m running events on Tuesday at the seventh edition of the Military Games which is being played in Wuhan. The 32-year-old athlete started the day by winning the 100m final with a timing of 12.00 seconds. He was followed by Peru’s Casas Jose with 12.65 and Fajardo Pardo Teodicelo of Colombia with 12.72 seconds at the second and third positions respectively.

In the disabled men’s 400m IT1 event, later in the day, Gunasekaran came back stronger to clinch his second medal in the competition. He clocked 53.35 seconds and left Colombia’s Teodicelo (58.95) and Ranchin Mickael (1:00.31) behind to win the race.

Gunasekaran had earlier won gold medals in the National Para Athletics champion in 200m and 400m events last year. He had also bagged a silver medal in the 400m race in the 2017 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.

In other athletics events at the Games, shot putter Tajinder Singh Toor managed to end his campaign at the sixth place with a best throw of 20.36m. Toor failed to get past the Tokyo Olympics mark of 21.10m.
