Silesian Open | Mary Kom secures Gold medal in 48kg category
MC Mary Kom has clinched the gold medal in the 48kg category at the 13th Silesian Open Boxing tournament in Poland while Manisha had to settle for a silver in the 54kg category. L Sarita Devi (60kg), Ritu Grewal (51kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (81kg) won four bronze medals as well.
Mary Kom had opted to not be a part of the Asian Games because she wanted to fight in the 48kg category and had set her eyes on preparing for the World Championships which is to be held in November. After winning two gold medals already in this year - one at the inaugural India Open in Delhi and the other at the Commonwealth games 2018 at the Gold Coast - Mary Kom continued her trail at the Silesian Open boxing tournament by beating Kazakhstan's Aigerim Kassanayeva. "Mary was terrific in executing her strategy, it was a flawless performance," India coach Rafaelle Bergamasco said.
After Mary Kom, Manisha took charge of the ring as she fought the bout against Ukraine's Ivanna Krupenia. Manisha had a more aggressive approach towards the bout but due to a lack of few efforts here and there, she was defeated 2-3 and had to settle for a silver medal.
"Manisha was very good in the bout and in my opinion, she deserved to win," Bergamasco said.
Jyoti Gulia (51kg), who is a former World Champion and the only boxer from India to have qualified for the Youth Olympics in Argentina to be held next month, also won a gold medal to become the only Indian to win a gold in the youth competition.
The juniors were no less as they successfully earned 13 medals; six golds, six silvers and a bronze, at the junior level competition at the same event.
