Mountaineer Bachendri Pal received India’s third highest civilian award as she was rewarded with the Padma Bhushan award for 'distinguished service of a high order'. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir and Indian footballer captain Sunil Chhetri were conferred with the Padma Shri award.

64-year old legendary mountaineer, Bachendri Pal, received India’s third highest Indian civilian award - Padma Bhushan - from president Ram Nath Kovind on Friday. Bachendri, whowbecame the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1984, was rewarded for  "distinguished service of a high order".

The government announced names of the Padma awardees 2019 on the eve of the 70th Republic Day. Amongst those names, the likes of world cup winning Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir, Indian football team skipper Sunil Chhetri and CWG gold medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia were rewarded with the Padma Shri award. Apart from these three, Dronavalli Harika (chess), Sharath Kamal (table tennis), Bombayla Devi Laishram (archery), Ajay Thakur (kabaddi) and Prashanti Singh (basketball) were also bestowed with the same honour.

The government conferred Padma awards to 112 people this year -- 4 Padma Vibushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri awards. Successful athletes such as Kamal, Bombayla Devi and Harika continue to represent India in their respective sports.

Last year ace Indian wrestler, Bajrang, was furious after he was not selected for the prestigious Khel Ratna award. Meanwhile, India cricket team captain Virat Kohli and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu were also recommended for country's highest sports award.
