The chief executive of the Jozi Stars franchise Jono Leaf-Wright has defended Chris Gayle, who has been underperforming for a while, and called him a big character and yet a sensitive one. Earlier, on Monday, Gayle revealed that he does not get respect from the franchises he plays for.

Bidding farewell to the Mzansi Super League, Jozi Stars recruit Gayle said, on Monday, that if he doesn’t perform for a couple of games he becomes the burden for his franchise. He complained about not getting respect. The defending champions of the MSL, Jozi Stars, have been winless in this season so far after having played six games. Despite Gayle’s 27-ball 54 against the Tshwane Spartans, the Stars lost the game on Monday, following which Gayle decided to quit. Gayle has also opted out from the India series stating that he needs a short break from cricket.

In reaction to Gayle’s statements, Leaf-Wright said on Tuesday that the 40-year-old Windies batsman is "sensitive".

"In Chris's head, he feels that when he doesn't perform, because there are such expectations, from the franchise, the fans, that he's the reason the team is not performing,” chief executive of Central Gauteng Cricket told The Star newspaper.

"I know Chris well, he seems like he's the big character, lots of bravado, the swag and all that stuff but he's actually a sensitive guy, and unfortunately, when he doesn't perform he really takes it to heart. He's certainly no burden on our side.”
