It goes without saying how important fitness is in the realm of cricket. Kent Spitfire’s Jack Leaning failed to raise the bar as he was embarrassed after being dismissed in a ridiculous fashion against Gloucestershire in the 73rd T20 Blast encounter at the College Ground, Cheltenham.

The decision to field first after winning the toss under overcast conditions paid dividends for the Gloucestershire unit as David Payne shone with the new ball. He removed Feroz Khushi, Twanda Muyeye, and captain Sam Billings in his opening spell before Daniel Bell-Drummond’s flamboyant act stabilized the stage. However, Beau Webster broke the 56-run fourth wicket stand in the tenth over before Leaning threw away his wicket in an unusual note in the following over.

Oliver Price came over the wicket to kick off the eleventh over and sprayed an off-spinner around the off stump. Leaning bent low on the back foot and intended to heave with the turn only to dislodge the bails using his foot. While he middled the stroke towards mid-wicket, the vice-captain’s right foot deflected the stumps behind, leading to an unusual dismissal in the form of hit wicket. The right-hander was deep inside the crease and failed to maintain poise while executing the stroke from outside the line, triggering the importance of fitness debate in cricket
