The turmoil for the BCCI is now increasing with every passing day. In a recent development, a coach was assaulted badly by the players for not selecting them in the team. The assault was so severe that the coach was hospitalized and even received 20 stitches.
What will a player do when he is not selected in the team? Generally, he will work his best and prove to the selectors and coach that he is worth being a part of the team. But that was not the case for an Indian coach, who was assaulted by the players for not being selected to the team.
This has not only put the BCCI under scrutiny, but even the cricket committee involved in the same has been put under scrutiny. It happened in the Cricket Association of Pondicherry, where the Under-19 coach of the team was badly assaulted in the training room. As per reports, this assault was done by the players over their exclusion from the team.
1. What Led to the Assault?
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is going on and it comes as a way for the players to prove their worth to the national selectors. But it is not quite possible for every player to be able to represent their domestic team at the same time. This also happened with three local cricketers who were a part of the Pondicherry team.
They were not selected in the team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which angered them. And out of this anger, the players have reportedly assaulted their Under-19 coach, S Venkataraman. This incident has also put the Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) under scrutiny.
This attack happened on Monday at around 11:00 AM in the indoor nets. S Venkataraman suffered a head injury which even led to him receiving 20 stitches. Along with that, he has also suffered with a fracture on his shoulder. Following this incident, a complaint was also filed at the Sedarapet police station.
The Sub Inspector confirmed this incident and also talked about its seriousness. He said, “Venkataraman received 20 stitches on his forehead, but he is stable. The said players are absconding, and we are trying to track them. Further details will be revealed in due course.”
Venkataraman has filed a complaint against three players, which includes Karthikeyan Jayasundaram (senior player), and two first class players which includes A Aravinddaraj and S Santhosh Kumaran. G Chandran has been also included in this list, as he reportedly provoked all three of them for an assault on the Head Coach.
The complaint said, “While Aravinddaraj held me, Karthikeyan took the bat that Santhosh Kumaran had and attacked me with the intention of killing me. They hit me, saying Chandran had told them that they would get a chance only if they killed me.”
2. CAP Replies to Allegations
The Cricket Association of Pondicherry also responded to the incident which had taken place. Taking a look at the seriousness of this matter, they have denied all the allegations put forward by the Under-19 head coach. Instead, they have defended the players, as the incident is still being investigated by the police.
Senthil Kumaran, who is the President of this association said, “Venkataraman has a documented history of several cases against him. He has often been known to behave rudely with local cricketers, using obscene language. His grudge against Chandran is also well-known, considering that we have repeatedly raised several issues within the CAP to the BCCI over the last seven years.”
This incident has also come at a time when CAP was already under scrutiny. As per the investigations, it was known that only five Puducherry born players have played for the team since Ranji Trophy 2021. Devajit Saikia, the Secretary of BCCI, said that this matter raises some serious issues and it shall be investigated soon.
3. Pondicherry in SMAT
The Pondicherry team is doing well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as of now. Present in the Elite Group C of the tournament, they have done well lately, securing wins even over the top teams such as Bengal. Currently, Pondicherry is holding the 4th spot in the group standings with 4 wins and 3 losses in 7 matches.
