AS-W vs BH-W | Twitter in splits as nervy Patterson and Johnston run their hearts out even after reaching target
Things become so tense in the middle that players forget to remain in the moment, and the WBBL game between Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat showed why. With only a run required off the last ball, the Strikers’ pair of Bridget Patterson and Ellie Johnston ran the second run in a comical finish.

Adelaide Strikers piled on further misery to the Brisbane Heat’s campaign in this year’s Women’s Big Bash League, subjecting them to a six-wicket loss in Adelaide on Tuesday. The opening duo of Laura Wolvaardt and Tammy Beaumont scored identical 33-ball 51s to provide a solid foundation to the Strikers in the chase of 170 as the visitors suffered their sixth straight defeat at the Karen Rolton Oval.
But the match had its fair share of nerves before the home side romped home off the last ball in a tense and thrilling finish. The Strikers needed seven off the final over, with the pair of Bridget Patterson and Ellie Johnston reducing it to a solitary run off the last delivery.
Heat’s all-rounder Nadine de Klerk tried to cramp Patterson for room, bowling a fuller-length delivery around her legs, but the batter was fortunate enough to get a deviation off her pads. As the ball sailed past the wicketkeeper towards the fine leg fence, the pair ran the first run quickly to reach the target.
However, they did not stop there as Patterson called Johnston for a second run instantly, with the latter confused and hesitant to start. But in the end, she returned to the umpire’s end with the Heat players going for a desperate review to extend the game to the super over.
But replays showed the ball going way down the leg side as the Strikers sealed a thrilling contest. However, Twitter was in splits as the pair’s bonus run gave a comical ending to an intensely fought battle.
Hilarious
