Carles Puyol has rejected the role of Sports Director offered to him by Barcelona revealing that he has other projects that would interfere with the task. He was offered the role on the basis of his previous stint with the club in an assistant role, with the Spaniard retiring from football in 2014.

During his time with Barcelona, Carles Puyol finishes his career after playing an incredible 593 games, became the captain and also won three Champions League titles. The Spaniard eventually left in 2015 after spending some time as an assistant under the then Sporting manager Andoni Zubizarreta. It thus made sense for Barcelona to offer him the job as a sporting director but the 41-year-old has opted to decline the offer.

"After weighing a lot, I have decided not to accept the club's offer. It has not been an easy decision since I have always said that I would like to return to what I consider my home, but several personal projects in which I am immersed (mean) I would be prevented at this time from giving you the exclusive dedication that the position deserves. I would like to thank the club for the trust placed in me by offering me this position of so much responsibility," Puyol tweeted.

Pep Segura left the position of General manager in the summer. Meanwhile, Puyolā€™s former teammates Eric Abidal and Patrick Kluivert work with the club, Abidal is currently the director of football at Barcelona and Kluivert is the academic director at the club.

Barcelona find themselves in deep waters and are enduring a tough time in La Liga. Coach Ernesto Valverdeā€™s position remains under threat after the team has suffered the worst possible start in the last 25 years. Barcelona lie 5th in the La Liga with three wins, but none of their wins have been away from home. Their away form has been a talking point across the fan base.
