The Leicestershire County Cricket Club has withdrawn Ajinkya Rahane from the last two games of the season’s County Championship games due to a ‘couple’ of suffered niggles. This has left the 36-year-old’s participation for Mumbai in the Irani Trophy clash against the Rest of India in jeopardy.

The Leicestershire CCC announced the latest development of Rahane’s departure following his stellar contribution to the ongoing season. He will be missing the last couple of County Championship matches against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire at the County Road and the Grace Road respectively.

“We’re disappointed to lose Ajinkya slightly earlier than planned, but we have to respect the judgement of our medical team and acknowledge this will present an opportunity for another member of our squad to step up and score runs. Ajinkya has been a fantastic addition to our changing room and imparted some invaluable knowledge onto our players. It was a pleasure to see how he conducted himself on and off the pitch and he will always be welcome back at Leicestershire,” Director of Cricket in Leicestershire CCC, Claude Hendersen said.

Rahane has impressed with 378 runs from ten innings at an average of 42 in the One Day Cup. His 71 on Leicestershire Foxes debut against arch-rivals Nottingham Outlaws is one of the prime highlights from the season. Rahan has been quintessential in steering the Foxes to the semi-final before incurring a loss against Somerset.

In addition, the Mumbaikar has also notched up 202 runs in the County Championship with a century against Glamorgan earlier this month. A couple of niggles have led to his adieu from the edition with the focus shifting to the upcoming domestic season in India. Although he is en route to get back to his fitter self ahead of a packed domestic calendar, the chances of representing Mumbai in the Irani Cup is jeopardized.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside my teammates and working with the coaches to improve my game. It was also a pleasure to meet the Leicestershire supporters and witness their passion for cricket. Everybody made me feel incredibly welcome and I would love to return to the Club again in the future,” Rahane expressed.

Rahane had a horrendous Ranji Trophy outing last year, getting just 213 runs from 13 innings at an average of 17.83. But he was influential with his leadership as Mumbai lifted their 42nd title after beating Vidarbha.
