Archery World Cup 2015 gets underway in Mexico City
The 2015 Archery World Cup is set to be hosted in Mexico City over October 24 and 25. India will be represented by Commonwealth champion, Deepika Kumari and Asian Games champion, Abhishek Verma, the only two Indians to qualify for the final event this year.
The event spanning two days features the year’s top 32 archers, who have come through a series of qualifiers held at Shanghai, Antalya, Wroclaw and Medellin and will consist of head-to-head direct knockouts.
Mexico will be hosting the event for the second time after having played host to the inaugural event in 2006, which was held at Mayapan Pyramids.
Kumari won Gold in the women’s individual recurve event and women’s recurve team event at the 2010 commonwealth games. She also reached the finals of three previous Archery World Cups in 2011 at Istanbul, 2012 at Tokyo and 2013 at Paris where she bagged the Silver in each of the three outings. In 2012, she was awarded the Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting award for her accomplishments.
Verma enters the finals having bagged the Gold medal at the stage 3 of the World Cup held at Wroclaw, Poland. His other recent achievements came in the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon where he walked away with the Gold medal for the men’s compound team event along with Rajat Chauhan and Sandeep Kumar. He also won the silver medal at the 2014 Asian games for his individual performance in the compound archery event.
Verma will be facing off against Martin Damsbo of Denmark in Men’s Compound division on Saturday, while Kumari will tee off against Kawanaka Kaori of Japan on Sunday.
