India’s compound mixed team of Abhishek Verma and Jyoti Surekha Vennam won the bronze medal in their third place-off match against Yesim Bostan and Demir Elmaagacli. The Indian duo defeated their Turkish counterparts 154-148 to finish third in the Archery World Cup in Shanghai.

India maintained a constant lead over their Turkish opponents right from the start of the game. India were at 39 points at the end of the first end as Verma looked in impressive form as the Turkish team of Bostan and Elmaagacli scored 35. But the lead kept extending as Verma and Jyoti scored 39, 37 and 39 in the next three ends to eventually win by 6 points.

It was India's second bronze medal in compound archery at the World Cups since the start of 2017. Also, this medal was Abhishek Verma’s seventh medal at the grand stage, with the previous one coming in last year’s World Cup where he had teamed up with 15-year-old Divya Dhayal. Verma also has a gold medal in the World Cup and that came in 2017.

“My sport is not that popular, I agree, but people need to realise that a medal is a medal, a World Cup win is a World Cup win, irrespective of what sport it may be in. Our country is obsessed with the Olympics. They need to realise how big a World Cup or World Championship win can be,” Verma was quoted saying by ESPN.
