Top Indian archer Abhishek Verma has stated that he is confident of winning two medals in the upcoming Asian Games, the same number he won in the last edition. However, the compound archery section, in which Verma won the two medals last time, has been scheduled excluding the individual events.

The 29-year-old Verma had won two medals, one in individual and the other in the team event, in the Incheon Asian Games in 2014 out of India’s total of four, all from the compound section.

Speaking about the absence of individual events in compound archery, Verma said it won’t matter as it will be the same for everyone. With the inclusion of the mixed pair event, he felt that he had a chance of winning two medals.

“I feel the exclusion of the individual events in compound archery won’t matter much as it will be the same for everyone. We have mixed pair event inducted now, so either way I stand a chance to win two medals,” Verma told PTI.

The 29-year-old further said that the archery team is not under pressure and is focusing on bagging the medals. He felt that all the teams were strong and it would be a competitive event.

“We will not be under pressure. It’s just that we are focusing on winning both the medals (team and mixed pair) and I feel all the teams are very strong. It will be a competitive event,” he added.

Verma further gave full credit to Sports Authority of India Center at Sonepat for improvement in the compound section.

“I would like to give the credit to the Centre of Excellence at SAI Sonepat. We stay here most of the times and it helps us to stay focused on shooting. This is the only reason we’re doing well,” Verma said.

Verma concluded by saying he is mainly focusing on doing well in the Asian Games and the World Cup Final and wants to win a medal in both the events.

“ My main focus at the moment is the Asian Games and the World Cup Final. I already have a silver medal in the World Cup Final. But I want to do well in both the events as both are equally important,” he concluded.
