Cricket is filled with stories of players, who were neither talented nor record makers, but are remembered for a momentary act of brilliance that has lived through the folklore. Somerset’s Max Weller had a similar moment on Friday when he rose to take a breath-taking catch of AB de Villiers.

In what was one of the most action-filled matches in the tournament’s history as Middlesex completed a world-record chase to book their spot in the league’s knockout stages, it was Max Weller who stole the headlines with a catch for the ages.

With AB de Villiers on the crease and on song in a high scoring match, the former Proteas captain was eager to go all guns blazing with 99 runs required off 59 balls. Batting on 32, he pulled a short-pitched ball by Tom Lammonby hard and low towards the leg side which looked like clearing the fence.

However, Max Weller, in a moment, that would definitely make the competition’s highlight reel, timed his jump to perfection before extending his hand backwards and completing a stunning catch one-handed catch, which we mostly find in baseball. The take was reminiscent of Ben Stokes’ effort in the World Cup against South Africa in what has since been labelled the catch of the century.

“Eat your heart out,” exclaimed a commentator.

AB de Villiers stood on the pitch for a couple of seconds shocked, unable to sink in what had just happened. He finally walked off shaking his head and even though his team pulled off a historic win, Weller’s catch will certainly go down in history.
