Bengaluru hockey fans will get their own team to support in the next season of the Hockey India League. JSW, who own defending Federation Cup champion Bengaluru FC, have decided to buy the new Bengaluru-based HIL franchise, as Hockey India looks to add more teams from Southern India.

Bangalore Hi-Fliers were the last hockey franchise to play from the city, in the now defunct Premier Hockey League (PHL). But with Hockey India looking to expand the six-team Hockey India League, JSW, one of India's largest business conglomerates, have stepped up to own the franchise which will participate in the league from 2017.

Initially, there were talks of adding a new team from Pune, but the organizers have decided against having two hockey teams from the same state. Instead, the officials are now looking to exploit the untapped hockey fraternity of the southern part of the nation. According to the Hindu, more hockey teams could be added to the league from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
