Singapore Slammers oust Japan Warriors in IPTL
Singapore Slammers had an easy outing in their first league game of the Philippines leg, as they routed Japan Warriors 29-20 today at the Mall of Asia Arena, Philippines. Singapore Slammers are now placed fourth in the league, whereas Japan Warriors are at the bottom of the table.
Former World No.1 Carlos Moya set the tone for the Slammers as he defeated Marat Safin 6-4 in 36 minutes in the legends tie. The duo shared an equal number of winners at 10-each, but Safin committed 13 unforced errors to lose the plot.
Indian doubles master Leander Paes and Pierre Herbert of France pulled one back for the Warriors through the men’s doubles tie with a win over Marcelo Melo and Dustin Brown 6-5 to make it 10-11. Leander and Pierre dominated at the net and converted 8 out of 13 net points.
However, Belinda Bencic helped the Slammers take a 2-1 when she defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-2. Mirjana came in place of Kurumi Nara to take on Bencic but could not stand up to the Swiss. Mirjana played an error-prone game with as many as 16 unforced errors to let the Slammers build a five-game lead at 17-12.
The men’s singles was a close encounter as Nick Kyrgios and Philipp Kohlschreiber put up a good show. The Australian lad got the better of Kohlschreiber as he defeated him 6-5. and gave the Singapore Slammers an almost unassailable lead of 23-17.
Kyrgios later paired up with Bencic in the mixed doubles to win the encounter against Herbert and Lucic-Baroni in 26 minutes. The Singapore team won the set 6-3 and sealed the match at 29-20.
Japan Warriors will next play the home team Philippine Mavericks tomorrow, while the Singapore Slammers will face UAE Royals on Tuesday.
