Mirza- Hingis talk about the 'SanTina' bonding and their “complete domination”
Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis capped a spectacular 2015 season with the WTA Finals crown in Singapore on Sunday, a triumph that the Indian ace described as “highlights our complete domination ever since we paired up as a team in March this year.”
The top-ranked women’s doubles pair extended their unbeaten streak to 22 matches, in the process bagging five of their nine crowns in succession to stamp their authority on the doubles circuit.
“Trying to stay at No. 1 in the world for as long as possible and to continue to do well in the Majors is what we constantly aim for and we could not have hoped for a better finish to the year 2015 which has been truly phenomenal,” Mirza told The Hindu newspaper on Monday.
Mirza had won the prestigious WTA Finals last year, partnering Zimbabwe’s Cara Black. “But, this year, all our wins were emphatic, and we dominated all the matches without dropping a set,” she said.
Since their last defeat, to the Chan sisters of Chinese Taipei, in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open in August, the Indo-Swiss pair has dropped only two sets.
After winning the WTA Finals, Hingis had told the WTA Tour website that Mirza “just played out of her mind.”
“It's incredible. I feel like it was a perfect day," Hingis said. "The energy was a bit better in practice and Sania just played out of her mind- she was everywhere today- on her side, behind me- it's about choosing the right partner!”
The partnership has been christened 'SanTina' by their fans.
““We really enjoy our bonding – both on and off the court. I repeat that the chemistry between us is something which we can’t describe in words. It is a team effort no doubt,” Mirza said.
“This is something I am really proud of and I am glad that the efforts of my parents and the support of my friends and well-wishers have paid off in such a wonderful fashion.”
