Punjab Marshalls continue unbeaten run in CTL

Punjab Marshallas made it two wins in two games with a convincing 23-15 win over Raipur Rangers in Champions Tennis League (CTL) 2015 at the CLTA stadium in Chandigarh on Friday. Punjab dominated the match with impressive performances from Marcos Baghdatis and Elina Svitolina. 

In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of Legends (Singles), Mixed Doubles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles and Men's Singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.

In the legends’ tie, Greg Rusedski thrashed former World No.1 Thomas Muster 5-1 to give a brilliant start to Punjab Marshalls.

Punjab Marshalls continued their fantastic run in the women’s singles tie with Elina Svitolina dispatching Alize Cornet 5-1 to extend their lead to 10-2.

Raipur Rangers came back into the match by winning the mixed doubles tie. Roberto Bautista Agut and Alize Cornet combined to defeat Marcos Baghdatis and Elina Svitolina 5-4 to close the gap on Punjab Marshalls. Going into the crucial men’s doubles tie, Punjab Marshalls led the match 14-8.

Marcos Baghdatis partnered Saketh Myneni to increase the lead of Punjab Marshalls to nine as they finished off Roberto Bautista Agut and Ramkumar Ramanathan 5-2 in the men’s doubles tie.

Bautista Agut defeated Marcos Baghdatis 5-3 in the men’s singles tie to take the match into super over time. Baghdatis held his nerve to win the first game and to guide Punjab Marshalls to their second win.

Punjab Marshalls will now face Mumbai Tennis Masters in the second home match tomorrow at the the CLTA stadium in Chandigarh. Punjab Marshalls had defeated Mumbai Tennis Masters 21-19 in Mumbai. Punjab now has four points from two games, while Mumbai are yet to open their account in the tournament.
