Birmingham to host 2022 Commonwealth Games
Birmingham will become the third English city, after London and Manchester, to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after the announcement today. Durban was supposed to host the event, as was announced in 2015, but due to financial difficulties, the venue had to be changed to Birmingham.
After Durban was stripped of the hosting rights, cities such as Victoria (Canada) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) had been afforded two months to apply for the games but none of two stepped up. Even though Birmingham’s initial bid had been rejected as it “did not meet the necessary criteria”, they have now been shown the green light.
Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor, in a tweet, called the announcement a "fantastic Christmas present for our region". The Games will take place at the Alexander Stadium, where the capacity will be increased from 12,000 to 50,000 for the Games and will later have a permanent capacity of 25,000.
The Games involve countries that were a part of the former British empire. Gold Coast, Australia, is the next country to host the Games in 2018 and the hosting rights for the 2026 event will be awarded in 2019.
