Davinder Singh Kang is set to face a four-year ban after testing positive for a steroid banned by the WADA. Last year he was tested positive for marijuana but was not suspended by NADA as it fell under the “specified substance” category in the prohibited list of the performance-enhancing drugs.

India’s potential prospect in the javeline throw event at the Commonwealth Games and Asian games, Davinder Singh Kang, has been suspended by the world athletics governing body after he tested positive for using a steroid banned by WADA. His future is now in the hands of IAAF as he might face a 4-year ban for breaching WADA’s code for using the banned substance in the form of steroids.

Four days ago, the officials of Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), the IAAF’s new anti-doping body that had started operations last year, tested the Punjab athlete under the “whereabouts” clause of the WADA Code as he is one of the five Indian athletes placed in the IAAF Registered Testing Pool. The test resulted positive for a banned steroid.

“The athlete gave the timing window of 10 am to 11 am on that particular day (four days back) in his ‘whereabouts’ information. The AIU people came to Patiala and took his sample and that contained a banned steroid. He is now provisionally suspended,” an official of the AFI told PTI from Patiala on condition of anonymity.

Kang, who was training under German legend Uwe Hohn, became the first Indian to reach the final round of the 2017 World Championships in London. Last year, he was tested positive for marijuana as well, whose traces were found in his urine sample. However, the athlete was not suspended by the national body since marijuana didn’t fall under the “specified substance” category in WADA’s prohibited list of the performance-enhancing drugs.

“This case will be dealt by the IAAF only. He will have to present his case in front of the AIU, an independent body set up by the IAAF,” said an official.
