Neeraj Chopra, the U20 World Champion in the javelin throw, recorded a best throw of 82.88m, which bettered the CWG qualifying mark of 81.80m by a comfortable margin. He was still some way off his best, having recorded the gold-medal winning throw of 86.48m at 2016’s Junior World Championships.

February 27, 2018, Patiala, was a landmark event for Indian athletes, as the city hosted the Indian Grand Prix athletics meet. The event represented an opportunity for Indian hopefuls to board the plane for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Australia, starting April 4 this year.

Many expected Neeraj Chopra, the world champion in the U20 age bracket, to make the cut. Make the cut he did, and he didn’t even need to be at this best, as he became the only Indian thrower to clear the qualification mark. This was the second time in the year Chopra has crossed the 80m mark. The other Indian hope in the javelin throw, Vipin Kasana, who has earlier recorded a personal best of 85.63m, cleared the 80m mark, but fell short of the qualification mark, notching a best throw of 80.04m.

Female discus thrower Navjeet Kaur Dhillon and long jumper Nayana James also qualified for the CWG on the day.
