IAAF Continental Cup | Jinson Johnson misses out on podium spot; PU Chitra finishes fourth

Jinson Johnson finished seventh in the 800m event with a timing of 1:48.44 in a race that was won by Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir of Kenya who ran a timing of 1:46.50 at the IAAF Continental Cup on Saturday. Meanwhile, PU Chitra finished a respectable fourth in the women’s 1500m event.

Jinson Johnson, the athlete who bagged two medals at the recently concluded Asian Games in Jakarta, had to settle for a seventh-place finish in the men’s 800m event at the ongoing IAAF Continental Cup in Czech Republic. The Indian clocked a timing of 1:48.44, which was almost two seconds more than his Asian Games timing, as Kenyan athlete - Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir won gold with a time of 1:46.50.

Johnson had broken 42-year-old Sriram Singh’s 800m record with a time of 1:45.65 during the National Inter-State Championships earlier this year in Guwahati. He also won gold in the 1500m event at the Asian Games last month.

In the women’s 800m event, PU Chitra, who had won a bronze in the just-concluded Asian Games, crossed the finishing line in an impressive fourth-place finish with a time of 4:18:45. Chitra had recorded a timing of 4:12.56 in Jakarta. 

Another Kenyan, Winny Chebet, was crowned the winner with a time of 4:16:01 while Shelby Houlihan (4:16.36) of United States and Rababe Arafi (4:17.19) of Morocco took the silver and bronze respectively.

Neeraj Chopra (men’s javelin throw), Arpinder Singh (men’s triple jump), Mohd. Anas (men’s 400m) and Sudha Singh (women’s 3000m steeplechase) will be seen in action as they take to the field in the second and final day of the tournament in Ostrava.
