In what has become a routine in recent times, Indian men’s singles shuttlers crashed out in the opening round of the Singapore Open Super Series on Wednesday. However, P V Sindhu continued her good run and progressed to the second round defeating Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand in a close match.

After making it to the quarters of three tournaments in a row, P V Sindhu continued her new-found form and entered the second round of the Singapore Open. Although the Indian started on a bad not losing the first game 9-21, the Indian picked up her game in the second and turned the match around by claiming it 21-17. The third and final game proved to be a walk in the park for the World No.10 and she won it 21-11 to enter the second round.

Sindhu will next face Chinese shuttler He Bingjiao, who lost to Sindhu in the second round of Malaysia Open last week, in the second round on Thursday.

Similar to Sindhu, who continued her good form, the Indian men’s singles shuttlers continued their horrible run, with Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and Ajay Jayaram, all crashing out in the opening round for the third tournament in a row. Swiss Open champion H S Prannoy put in a spirited effort against top-seed and World No.1 Chen Long of China by taking the match to the third game, before losing it 21-18, 18-21, 19-21.

World No.14 Kidambi Srikanth lost to World No.28 Hsu Jen Hao 21-11, 18-21, 18-21, while Ajay Jayaram went down to Marc Zwiebler 17-21, 16-21.

Pranaav Jerry Chopra also entered the second round on Wednesday winning both opening round matches in the men’s doubles alongside his partner Akshay Dewalkar, and in the mixed doubles along with N. Sikki Reddy. Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar defeated Chinese pair of Lu Kai and Liu Cheng 21-17, 16-21, 22-20, while in the mixed doubles Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki Reddy defeated the Indonesian pair of Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini 21-15, 21-17.
