PV Sindhu targets gold at BWF World Championship
After beating China’s Chen Yufei in a one-sided semi final, yesterday, PV Sindhu is looking forward to securing her first gold medal at the World Championship in Glasgow today. The Hyderabadi lass also admitted that her grueling three-game win over Cheung Ngan Yi brought her confidence back.
Sindhu came to the World Championship in Glasgow to at least better her previous records as she failed to cross the semifinal hurdle and had to be content with bronze medals in the previous editions. She came to this tournament as a much-improved player after winning the silver medal at last year’s Olympics in Rio and winning the India Open Superseries title this April.
Staying true to her abilities, the Rio Olympic silver medalist showed glimpses of that confidence and the improved game sense as she defeated the 19-year-old Chen Yufei 21-13 21-10 in 48 minutes to make it to her first World Championship final where she will face Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara who edged past Saina Nehwal to become the first Japanese player to reach the World Championship final. And Sindhu, sitting on the brink of creating history, insists that she will give her best to achieve the gold medal today.
“It is a very special feeling to win a medal for India in such major events. Once you are in the final you want to win it and I will do my best to achieve that,” Sindhu was quoted as saying by PTI.
Sindhu has a 3-3 head-to-head record against Okuhara but has won their last two encounters including the semi-finals of the Rio Olympics.
“Yes, I beat her in Rio but that won’t count here. She has been playing well. We both know each other’s game well and it would be another tough match in the final,” she added.
The Indian shuttler didn’t look back after winning the first game in just 22 minutes and opened up an 8-0 lead immediately in the second game. Although Yufei tried hard to crack the code in the second game, she failed spectacularly and handed Sindhu a first-ever final berth. However, surprisingly, Sindhu revealed that it was not an easy game for her but she was well prepared for those shots.
“It was definitely not an easy match as there were long rallies and she was playing well. But I was prepared for her shots and that made the difference,” said Sindhu.
Sindhu had similarly thrashed another Chinese Sun Yu in the quarterfinals in just 39 minutes on Friday but stated that the nerve-racking third round win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi was probably the turning point for her in the championship.
“Your confidence suddenly goes up when you win such matches. I was under pressure in that match as she came back to save three game points in the second game but I managed to win the match. When that happens you tend to believe that something is going your way,” said the world number four.
Sindhu will lock horns with Okuhara in the second game of the day, today, and you can follow all the action in our live blog.
