Indian prodigy Lakshya Sen booked a place in the quarter-finals of the World Junior Championship by beating Taiwan’s Chen Shiau Cheng. In doubles category, while men’s doubles Vishnu Vardhan Goud and Srikrishna Sai progressed, women’s pair Aditi Bhatt and Tanisha Crasto crashed out.

Junior World No 4 Sen had a tricky battle on his hands as he took on the Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarters at the Badminton World Juniors on Thursday in Markham, Canada. The 17-year-old was taken by surprise in the first game by the ninth seed as he won 21-15. The pressure was instantly on the Indian who was believed to be one of the favourites to win the championship and he responded in some fashion. He won the next two games 21-7, 21-14 in no time to book a place in the next round, where he will face Malaysia’s unseeded Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin.

In the doubles category, the men’s doubles pair of Vishnu and Srikrishna also progressed to the next round of the tournament as they overcame the Indonesian pairing of Dwiki Rafian Restu and Bernadus Bagas Kusuma Wardana 21-11, 21-17 in straight games. Next, they would face the 10th seeded Tae Yang Shin and Chan Wang in the quarters.

However, everything didn’t go well for the Indian contingent as the other pair of Aditi Bhatt and Tanisha Crasto, who were in the women’s doubles pair, were humble by Indonesia’s Agatha Imanuela and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 13-21, 11-21.
