BWF World Junior Championships | Lakshya Sen settles for bronze after losing in semifinals

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has clinched a bronze medal at the ongoing BWF World Junior Championships in Markham, Canada after losing to Thaliand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in three games. Sen’s first medal in three attempts at the prestigious event is the only one for the Indian shuttlers here.

Sen did put up a good show against top seed Vitidsarn in the semi-final match as it went till decider. The match went for an hour and 11 minutes in which the Indian youngster lost to the 17-year-old Thai shuttler. Lakshya did start off well as the first game was a well-contested one and Sen went on to win it 22-20.

The defending champion made a great comeback in the next two by clinching the second 21-16 and the third 21-13 to outplay his opponent from India. Earlier in July, Sen had beaten the Thai shuttler in straight games to clinch the Badminton Asia Junior Championships but failed to repeat his heroics at the world event. 

Vitidsarn will now face Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the final after the latter defeated third seed Li Shifeng of China 21-11, 19-21, 21-17 in the other semi-final match. Prior to this, Sameer Verma had also won a bronze at the event back in 2011 while Saina Nehwal had bagged a gold in 2008. Other Indians Sai Praneeth and HS Prannoy had also won the junior world title in the past from India.
