India’s singles campaign at the ongoing French Open came to an end as Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and Kidambi Srikanth lost their respective quarter-final matches in straight games. The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty is the only Indian challenge left in the French Open.

Saina, who was looking to avenge her loss at the Denmark Open Final against Tai Tzu Ying, seemed to be in a good form in the French Open. Saina had a good lead of 5-2 at the beginning of the first game and forced Tai into mistakes and was leading 11-6 at the mid-game break. Tai, however, scored six consecutive points after Saina had a lead of 16-9 and reduced the gap to 15-16. Besides having the lead of 4 points in the initial phase, Tai took control in the last 20 minutes and won the game by 22-20.

Saina wasn’t effective in the second game and Tai outplayed the Indian shuttler and at the break was leading by five points against Saina. She ended the game with 21-11 by knocking Saina out of the French Open.

In men’s singles quarter-final, Srikanth lost to Kento Momota 16-21, 19-21. Momota dominated the entire first game and won it comfortably by a margin of five points while in the second game the Indian showed some fight against the world no. 1 but eventually lost the game by two points and was knocked out of the French Open in just 52 minutes.

PV Sindhu also lost her quarter-final match 13-21, 16-21 to He Bingjiao of China. The Chinese shuttler dominated throughout the match and didn’t allow Sindhu to settle down during the entire phase of the contest. Bingjiao had complete control of the game which ended in just 40 minutes in favour of the Chinese shuttler.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated the other Indian men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy in straight games. The first game was a competitive one and it was evenly-poised as Attri and Sumeeth made it 11-11 at one stage. Rankireddy and Shetty eventually won the first game 21-17 and also dominated in the second one to make it to the semi-finals by winning the match 21-17, 21-11. They will meet the Indonesian pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
